For a quick tip I’m going to show you how to create a starburst brush quickly for use in all your designs. This method will let you create the starburst accurately and precisely at any size.

Step 1 – Gradient

To start, create a new document 2000 x 2000 pixels. Alt + Double Click the background layer to convert it to a normal layer. Then remove everything in the layer. Now select the gradient tool and customize it like this:

Drag the gradient from the bottom of the document to the top, don’t forget to hold shift to keep the line straight. Now go to Filter > Distort > Wave and enter these options:

Step 2 – Creating The Effect

Now, go to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates

Now you have a starburst, time to convert it into a brush!

Select the starbust layer and CTRL + Click the image box in the layer, this selects all of the starburst. Now go to Edit > Define Brush Preset.

Click OK and you now have your custom brush. Try it out!

This tutorial will show you how to use grids, guides and the alignment tools. These three options will keep your designs accurate and stop you using the nudge tool all the time to get your layers in place, which can be frustrating at times. Each option is used for a different situation, guides are used for designing websites whereas grids are used in general practices and the alignment options are for small scale operations (such as centering text).

Grids

To set up a grid head over to the Edit menu and select Preferences. Navigate to Guides, Grids & Slices.

In the grid panel, you can set the options. If I have a 20 x 20 cm canvas and I wanted a 2.5cm grid I would set the Gridline every: to 2.5 cm. The subdivisons lets you set how many grid lines are in every sqaure for further accuracy. To enable to grids go to View > Show > Grid

You can also set the colos or the grid lines and the subdivisons which can be helpful. When you move layers around on the canvas with grids enabled the layer should automatically snap to the line if you have Snap enabled.

Guides

Guides create lines in either horizontal or vertical directions all the way through the canvas. You can set how far in the line is by a percentage or unit. To show guides go to View > Show > Guides. To create a new guide to to View > New Guide.

The guides tool as you can see is very versatile, it lets you enter any unit you want such as pixels or percentage. If you have show guides enabled then you should see a blue line appear. To change the color of the guides go to the preferences panel. As before, if you have Snap enbabled then any layer you drag near a guide will snap to it.

To delete guides, drag the guide with the Move Tool outside of the working area (not just the canvas).

Alignment

As you can see this text need to be centered

Now, many people have seen these alignment tools but don’t know how to use them. It’s actually very simple. First off select the Marquee Tool (M). Create a selection around the whole canvas.

Select the layer you want to center and select the move tool.

If you have enough common sense you’ll relise what each button does. The ones with both sqaures in the middle of the line means center of horizontal and vertical. Click both these two to center the text layer.

The text is now centered, the tool works off the current selection so you can center the layer in any part of the image or to the left or right etc…

Finish! If you have any questions just comment!

Many people that have photoshop have never used the actions window let alone seen it. Well this is about to change because this tutorial will teach you all you need to know about the actions window. The action window lets you record every action you make in photoshop from using the filter gallery to creating a new layer and applying a gradient to it. Nearly everything is recorded. Actions are desgined to increase productivity and speed. They are in its simplest form – custom built shortcuts with an included option to assign a hotkey to an action.

For this tutorial I am going to be using an image of a tiger, you can find this image here.

Step 1

Open up the image you want to use, now if you don’t already have the actions panel open go to Window > Actions

You should already see by some actions by default, these ones are given to you. Some of them are quite handy but mainly useless and arn’t very good! If you want you can create you’re own folder or you can use the default one provided. I created a new folder named ‘Tutorial’ for the sake of this tutorial.

On a side note: When you create a new action, the action automatically starts recording, you have been warned.

Step 2

The action I’m going to create is increasing the contrast in a different way, using the Gaussian Blur method. This method works very effectivley in some images.

Now, create a new action.

Set the options as you wish, now click Record. Follow my steps to record this action. Be wary if you make any mistake the actions panel will record this! Don’t worry though, you can stop the recording at any time, delete the unwanted steps and then start recording again. It is very versatile.

Step 3

Select the tiger layer, and go to Filter > Blur Gaussian Blur

As the picture states, set the Radius to 2.0 pixels.

Now its time to Fade the gaussian blur, go to Edit > Fade Gaussian Blur…

Set the options accordingly.

Now you can press Stop on the actions panel. Although this action is very very short it will still increase your working speed. Some actions are very long about 30 steps or so, these actions achieve special effects such as a horror effect.

Finished!

You should be able to apply this action to any image. If you have any questions just comment.

I, personally love horror films and find them very scary (I know you do too). Well those horror posters also seem yellowish, gory, and sickening. This tutorial will show you how to create a dark ominous lighting effect from an ordinary image. You can now frighten your friends and create your own horror film!

Horror Film Lighting Effect:

Steps to follow:

Step one:

Open any favorite picture of yours in Photoshop. Let us assume a picture of a woman here.

Step two:

Now go to layer menu and choose ‘Duplicate Layer’.

Step Three:

Now Press Ctrl+Shift+U key on the keyboard. You may also choose Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. This will convert your picture into black and white mode.

Step four:

Once the picture has been converted in to black and white mode it is time to set the opacity. Visit the layer palette, choose opacity and bring it to 50%.

Step five:

Choose Layer > Duplicate Layer, and after that choose Linear Light from blending mode in layers palette, and set opacity to 87%. Look at the picture below!

Step six:

Here you need to create a new layer. Under foreground color, set this color as #443D3D. Now take the Paint Bucket Tool (G) and click on the picture to fill it. You may also use a keyboard shortcut (Alt+Backspace).

Step seven:

Now go to Layers palette and choose Overlay under blending mode. Set the Opacity to 87%.

Step eight:

Choose Filter > Noise > Add Noise.
